I love these Grey fox kits, they flow through dense underbrush with unbelievable grace and elegance. They only come out at twilight and are quiet as ghosts. We made eye contact for a brief moment before he turned and melted into brush. Note the blue eyes which are so striking in the kits; they turn hazel as the fox matures.
Fusartaro Hammer Fist and Steel
This gentleman is a very rare master Japanese sword smith. He is a 25th generation smith, and legacy of the Kanefusa family tradition. His swords command extremely high prices, and are coveted by CEOs of large Japanese companies, very serious collectors and practitioners of Japanese martial arts. Permission to photograph him in Japan is a privilege rarely permitted. I like how the smiths fist and hammer are visible at the heart of the explosion in this photo. The smithy is kept dark so that the smith can judge the temperature of the metal by the intensity and color of its glow.

Puffin 1
An Icelandic Atlantic Puffin with a bill full of translucent lesser sandeel. These amazing birds are a joy to watch. They nest in 3ft deep flower adorned cliffside burrows, and hunt small fish to feed the hungry chicks hiding inside. They are agile flyers and can dive 200ft under the freezing waves to catch these translucent fish.

Proud Mother
This proud mother hummer guards a nest full of eggs the size of mini cocoa marshmallows. The mother is about the size of a human thumb. the fibers holding the nest together are spiderwebs which the mother hummingbirds harvest to construct their nests.

The view from the Old Town Hall Tower, built in 1338 and harboring the famous astronomical clock, in Old Town Square. The dual spired Cathedral is Tyn Church. The colorful red tented marketplace below opens for Christmas each year, and is full warm breads, candy and other Christmas treats.

Blue Geisha In Temple
The profound serenity and beauty of this quite temple hidden in the bustle of Kyoto is difficult to put into words. The vibrant floral blue of this elegant geisha absolutely blooms amid the quiet earth tones of the moss and rock garden and smooth wooden planks of the temple.

A snake charmer dancing with a cobra in Jemma el-Fnaa Marrakech. These charmers are clannish and the skills are passed down from generation to generation. This man showed us his arm which had been bitten by a puff adder, and I can assure you the wound was genuine. The arm bore the scars of a long fasciotomy and showed the severe withering and muscle wasting typical of these cytotoxic viper venoms.

I found these Moroccan lanterns hauntingly beautiful at night in the otherworldly marketplaces. This lady shows great character as she displays her wares. That glare makes me wonder if I have been cursed every time I look at the photo.

2 MILLION BATS OVER TOWN LAKE AUSTIN
The Congress Street Bridge in Austin, Texas hosts North America's second largest bat colony. As the sun sets, almost 2 million bats pour out en masse into the night sky, creating a dramatic scene that hundreds of people line up to see. The best views however, are from the lake itself. I love this photo not only because it is a great memory of an adventure that I shared with my son, but it is a departure from my usual style of detailed, close up wildlife shots.
Here the bridge divides the photo with the quickly darkening night sky and it's nocturnal masters above, while the retreating light of the setting sun casts a golden glow on the bridge and water below. The sun also lends some warm color to the vibrant boats. All the while, a dense crowed of silhouetted spectators in between look on at both the bats and boat pilots.
The lazy recreational boats on the sunlit water reminds me in spirit (if not equivalent talent) to the impressionist summer paintings from La Grenouillere by Renoir and Monet. These artists were also fascinated by the weekend lake retreat featuring slow moving row boats paddled by vacationing urbanites of Paris.A light dusting of snow covers the empty bridge at dawn.

Tokyo Skyline In Orange
The electric fires of Tokyo shine in this nocturnal skyline shot. Tokyo tower (which changes color periodically) blazes orange tonight, and sets low hanging clouds ablaze with its orange glow. Taillights of the unending traffic resemble a river of lava in this time lapse shot. Daihatsu ferris wheel, the Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo bay are visible on distant right horizon.

Frozen In Time
This ruby throated hummingbirds wings beat around 50 times per second. To freeze the motion of the wings 8 high speed flashes firing at a duration of 1/31,000th of a second were required.

Aerial Assault
I believe that this is a unique photo. The territorial male flew in at about 30mph and struck the female that I was photographing with an audible slap. Note how the tiny sharp talons of the male hummingbird are grasping/striking the wing of the female and wrenching it painfully to the side. The female appears to be actually grimacing in pain. Both birds tumbled off the feeder toward me and flew away chittering angrily. I have not ever been able to find another photo, of this quality, showing hummingbirds in physical combat.

Evening Maiko Under Cherry blossoms
As evening descends and the street lanterns ignite, this Maiko of Kyoto stops on a bridge under overhanging cherry blossoms. Note the skiff in the canal behind her. Note also how the Maiko (a younger Geisha) matches her makeup and kimono to the seasonal cherry blossoms.
