I believe that this is a unique photo. The territorial male flew in at about 30mph and struck the female that I was photographing with an audible slap. Note how the tiny sharp talons of the male hummingbird are grasping/striking the wing of the female and wrenching it painfully to the side. The female appears to be actually grimacing in pain. Both birds tumbled off the feeder toward me and flew away chittering angrily. I have not ever been able to find another photo, of this quality, showing hummingbirds in physical combat.
